Parental Information from Storling:
Though there is no speech in this production there are a few elements
that could concern younger children – or anyone really :
1) Opening Scene: A slave is hiding in the aisles trying to escape plantation workers with
artificial guns (also in aisles). A gun shot goes off and the curtains open to music
and slaves rhythmically working on the plantation.
2) A family’s son is sold to another slave owner3) There is a whipping : the slave is flat on the ground and the whip hits
the stage but it looks and sounds like the slave is being hurt. – When
this person gets home, his wife cleans the wounds and he yells out in
pain.4) The escaped slave is caught and killed – the audience does not see this though – his body
is pulled across the floor – and performers respond – this is how we know that he was killedThese are the toughest parts of the show. It’s handled very well and there are no ‘visible’ injuries.
In total, these moments are only about 2 minutes total out of the 2 hour show.
